Same as Skype, or when you make a call using WhatsApp. You only use data to call someone, not your minutes or airtime from your exiting services provider. It will look and feel like a GSM call (a call made using "airtime"), but in fact it's a VOIP call (a call made using data). VOIP is the acronym for "Voice Over Internet Data".
We are currently using the same application in our office and in our call center, same as many companies and institutions currently have, and we are pretty happy about the quality and features it provides.
It must however be stressed that all calls, whether a GSM or VOIP calls, are dependent on the network infrastructure and congestion at certain times of the day and how the congestion on the towers are maintained and managed by our Mobile operators.

Calls between MemaMobi Apps are free, except for the Data consumed. Data and calls made possible using data are by far cheaper than Airtime so you can expect to save plenty on your bills.
Calls to our mobile operaters Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, Telkom (mobile and landline numbers) and Virgin Active Mobile are NOT free since they (the mobile operators) charge us a connection fee to connect to their towers and convert the data call into a GSM call.
The current connection fee is R 0.50 (50 cents) per minute (billed per second) and the minutes used to make these calls are called "Interconnect Minutes".
The Mema Sim Card is backed by the MTN network and we have negotiated discounted data prices with our service providers to ensure you can talk longer and surf more.
Once downloaded and enabled, the MemaMobi app is registered on the MEMA network and a new mobile number will be assigned and linked to the MemaMobi app. It is possible to "mask" the number to your current GSM number, but when someone else calls you from their MemaMobi app to your number, GSM will take priority and the call will come through to your GSM number which will relate in charges for the person calling you. For that and other practical and security related reasons, we will not be masking any numbers.

Yes, it's possible via our Short Code service if you ran out of DATA, or by logging onto your member portal. You will be able to top up using your Credit card, Debit card or from your accumulated profits, derived from your MEMA Business. The cost to top up with another 100 minutes is R 50.00.
After the 1st month, you can renew the service on a "Pay-it-as-you-need-it" basis. When you renew it, your benefits will last for 30 days. What you don't use in the allocated 30 days, you forfeit.
